At the end of last week Friendly Fires had a residency at the O2 Academy in Brixton – filling the venue three nights on the trot. Each night had a different set of supports and different show so I was really intrigued to see how it all came together. I had opted for the Friday as the support band, SBTRKT, put together one of my favourite albums of this year.
After the initial trouble with security insisting that I couldn’t shoot either support as “they’re only DJs – who’s going to want pictures of them?” – fortunately I managed to convince him otherwise and both Chad Valley and SBTRKT were brilliant.
Friendly Fires’ set was amazing. Considering the last show I’d shot them was at Heaven (zero lighting, high stage) this was on another planet. The lights were interesting, Ed (the singer) came out and danced right by us at the front of the stage, they brought on Brazilian dancers with all the feathers carnival style! Just amazing. I had such a big grin on my face when I left. Most of all though, I was really pleased to have captured Ed mid-dance and show some real energy and movement that’s often lost with the darker shots from their other shows.
